The Dental Health Component facilitates the synthesis of the current evidence for the deleterious effects of malocclusion.
The DHC records the various occlusal traits of a malocclusion which would reduce the longevity of the dentition and surrounding structures.
There are five grades, Grade 1 and Grade 2 representing no need for orthodontic treatment, Grade 3 a borderline need, and Grades 4 and 5 requiring orthodontic treatment on dental health grounds.
Only the worst dental trait is recorded.
The DHC Ruler has been designed to provide the information necessary to record the DHC.
The ruler has been developed for the clinical setting in which information is collected regarding competence of the lips, discrepancy between retruded contact position and intercuspal position on closure and masticatory/speech problems.
